Adventuress

The 133′ historic schooner Adventuress was launched in 1913 in East Boothbay, ME.  Built by the Rice Bros. shipyard and designed by renowned naval architect B.B. Crowninshield, Adventuress was commissioned by John Borden II to collect a specimen of a Bowhead whale for the Natural History Museum in New York.  On her maiden voyage, Adventuress sailed with a young naturalist named Roy Chapman Andrews who would later go on to do groundbreaking research on dinosaurs in the Gobi Desert.  Borden sailed Adventuress to the Arctic sea but was unable to collect his whale specimen.  After only one year since her launch, Borden sold Adventuress to the San Francisco Bar Pilots.

Adventuress spent the next 35 years as a pilot vessel, safely guiding ships into San Francisco Bay.  During World War II, Adventuress was enlisted by the Coast Guard to patrol the west coast of the United States.

In 1952, “Doc” Freeman brought Adventuress to Puget Sound where she has sailed ever since.  The ship found her way into the hands of Monty Morton who founded Youth Adventure and used the ship as a sail training vessel.  In 1989, Adventuress was sold to environmental nonprofit Sound Experience, which currently owns and operates the vessel.

For over 20 years, Sound Experience has used Adventuress to educate, inspire and empower all to care for Puget Sound.  Over the past two decades, more than 60,000 people have sailed aboard the historic schooner to experience the majesty of the northwest.  People of all ages are welcomed aboard on daylong and overnight sails voyaging throughout the region’s waterways.

In the 19th century, prehistoric log jams from natural debris prevented river navigation on several Puget Sound area rivers, including the Skagit, Stillaguamish, and Snohomish rivers. Dead trees that reached Puget Sound often became half-submerged “deadheads” that could pierce hulls when struck by a wooden vessel. The federal government began building “snagboats” to remove the [...]
