The Center for Wooden Boats

  • Built 1977

Wooden boatbuilding inspired Seattleites Dick and Colleen Wagner to found a hands-on museum dedicated to preserving the boatbuilding arts. Described as an urban oasis near the heart of downtown Seattle, The Center for Wooden Boats, located on the southern shore of Seattle’s Lake Union, offers boatbuilding classes for individuals and families, novice to expert. The collection of more than 100 wooden vessels ranges from small catboats to vessels up to 40 feet long. The boatbuilding skills of native peoples are honored with several canoe and small boat projects.

Sailing is an important part of the museum. CWB offers a free sailing excursion on Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. The museum’s sailing programs include SailNOW, a group program intended for beginners, and a one-on-one refresher course for experienced sailors. Other programs feature opportunities to sail restored “museum pieces” and learn about small-scale steam. Boat rentals are also available.
