Back in 1974 I took this picture, the first I ever took in the San Juan Islands. It was apparantly a schooner but to this day I have not been able to identify her. I am aware of the current tall ships, Alcyone, Adventuress, and Zodiac but none of these seem to match. The only clue I have ever received was that someone back then told me she belonged to a boys club, but not sure. Once again I am asking for anyone who may be able to identify her to come forward and settle my 32 year mystery. ~ J. R.
Update: Looks like it was a ship known as “Martha” and once owned by James Cagney. Thanks goes to Al Hughes, a Three Sheets NW member.

J.R. While I do not know what vessel you’ve captured here, it is a nice photo. Thanks for your comment on my mystery ship. I had been calling her the Adventuress but thought with the Three Sheets NW group I had a better chance is confirming my original guess. Good luck with this one… Foster
I am guessing the Martha. Check out history here http://www.schoonermartha.org/history-of-martha/
Used as a camp vessel during the time in question.
Just might be. The sails are different, but the lines are the same. Thanks!
That’s a tough one. It does remind me of Martha, a stays’l schooner. The mast heights are similar and Martha does have the fisherman. But I don’t remember her having a compass rose stitched on her main stays’l…
I just bought a skiff off of Craigs List. It was described as being tender to the Graybeard.
The pic on Craigs List was the exact picture that you have posted in your query.
Mike:
I’ll have to discern if Graybeard is the same ship, although Graybeard looked to me to be a more modern ship than the “mystery ship” which one of my blog followers thinks is the “Martha”. Another local photographer concurred that the mystery ship might be the “Martha” as well. Both were in the vicinity at the same time. You can see two images of Gaybeard here: http://www.pbase.com/jrhudson/image/100366397/original
Do you have a link to a pic of your skiff? Thanks for the communication! J. R.
