Boating Advice
Public Group active 2 weeks, 2 days agoSometimes you need a little help from your friends. How do you install that thing anyway? How do you know if a boatyard is giving you a fair price. How do you find a good yard, or surveyor? Let’s see if we can crowdsource these questions as a group. Ask your question, see who answers, everyone has to be civil, and if some yard, service or person gets a diss, let’s ask them to explain their side too. There could be perfectly good reasons a project didn’t turn out perfectly.

Boating Advice 2 weeks, 2 days agoLooking for advice on best family sailing vessel under $5k – looking for something 25’-30’, sleeps 4, hopefully has enclosed head but not required. Would like her to be seaworthy enough for crossing Juan de Fuca Strait. And enough space below for a family of 3 or 4 to get out of the elements, cook an evening meal at anchor, etc. Suggestions?

Boating Advice 1 month agoHello all —
I am a new member here at Three Sheets and a brand new boater — bought my first boat (a 14′ livingston skiff) in December. I have a partner who is learning to love the boat but hates the load-unload process. I’d like to surprise her for her birthday this Friday by picking her up in Bellevue from work, tooting through the ship…[Read more]

Boating Advice 1 month, 3 weeks agoHi all,
Planning a trip to Tofino from Seattle, have a 22′ Whaler Revenge and would take it in stages and stay close to the coast with another boat (25 Pursuit). Any thoughts on hazards or risks versus the […]

Boating Advice 2 months, 1 week agoThere is a great update on hard and ablative bottom paints in this month’s practical sailor. That would be a great place for you to start. They have a sister mag devoted to powerboats, I believe, but the paint […]

Boating Advice 3 months, 3 weeks agoI’m taking my 34-foot “trawler” from St. Helens Marina to its new home in downtown Portland. The rivers are swollen with an occasional tree trunk passing by. My planned route is the Multnomah Channel (less […]

Boating Advice 3 months, 3 weeks agoI’m also a new member to this group, and hope to get some much-needed advice. I’m relocating my 34-foot “trawler” from St. Helens Marina to Riverplace in Downtown Portland. We’ve had a recent snow, followed by warmer rains, which means snowmelt and swollen rivers, and debris. I plan on having two brothers on board with long poles to divert…[Read more]

Boating Advice: 8 months, 3 weeks agoHi all! I am new to the group, and new to NW boating. I am in Olympia and have an opportunity to boat all weekend….leaving from Budd Bay. Limitations: Husband that barely tolerates boating has agreed to one night onboard, then I will drop him off and pick up my friend in his place who loves boating! Teenagers onboard for the whole…[Read more]

McMicken Island is fantastic and within easy reach from Olympia. You could grab a mooring bouy instead of anchoring, but those go pretty quickly.

And remember that Sail and Power Squadrons are great place for boater education. A friend from the Seattle Chapter passed along this info “You might pass along to the new boater that we have a 7-week class starting 27 Sept and a 1-day version on 8 Oct, both aimed at folks new to boats and/or the Pacific NW (plus gets a WA boaters card needed…[Read more]

Boating Advice: 9 months agoI’m looking for some advice on places to anchor, I’m taking a sailing trip over Labor Day weekend leaving from Shilshole Saturday morning, we’d like to anchor out both nights in different spots then return Monday. Anyone have any suggestions of places to go in such a short time?
-
Hi Meghan. Oh, so many good choices. A quick and easy one is to consider circumnavigating Bainbridge Island. There are some excellent anchorages in Port Madison on the north end; Manzanita Bay on the west side and Port Blakely (our favorite) on the East side.
If you are looking for someplace to get off the boat and enjoy a town, you can…[Read more]

Thank you so much for your advice! We ended up tying up to a mooring buoy at Blake Island then anchoring at Port Blakely. It was beautiful there!

Sounds very sporting with the tree trunk handicap. Personally we would only attempt travel on this strech in good daylight, and some careful attention to the storm fronts that have recently dislodged a flood stage of abnormal trash into the rivers. Most importantly I would do what my father lived by….use the trawler or tugboat in front of you…[Read more]
