Boating Advice
Public Group active 2 weeks, 2 days agoSometimes you need a little help from your friends. How do you install that thing anyway? How do you know if a boatyard is giving you a fair price. How do you find a good yard, or surveyor? Let’s see if we can crowdsource these questions as a group. Ask your question, see who answers, everyone has to be civil, and if some yard, service or person gets a diss, let’s ask them to explain their side too. There could be perfectly good reasons a project didn’t turn out perfectly.

Boating Advice 2 weeks, 2 days agoMy question relates to how to best snub a rope anchor rode. I’ve got a 42′ powerboat with a horizontal windlass. Its got a chain and rope rode (predominantly nylon rope). There is no center cleat or sampson post to snub the line to when the anchor is deployed, so the windlass takes the load absent some other device. There are cleats on the…[Read more]

Boating Advice 8 months, 4 weeks agoDoes anyone know if there is an ABYC standard for the distance between batteries and fuel tanks? I need to add battery capacity and the best location is quite close to a diesel fuel tank.

Boating Advice 11 months agoHi everyone , my question is about “canvas covers” I was in the tampa bay area for a couple weeks and noticed the canvas used was about 100 percent sunbrella water resistant. I was told most other products break down within a few years from UV. I have top gun waterproof (4 years old) dodger bimini and encloser on my sailboat. So far I,ve no…[Read more]

Hi Brad,
Our boat came with a Top Gun dodger. So I had a conversation with a local dodger makers. His thoughts were the Top Gun is a fine fabric, but not as common up were in the Northwest as it is in Florida. Personally, I like the look and feel of Sunbrella. So when we have to recanvass, I would go with that.

I was just back for the 50th anniversary celebration of the keel laying of my old command, the brigantine STV Pathfinder. I spoke with their sailmaker, Andrew Soper of Soper Sails in Kingston ON, after admiring the ship’s new set of sails and he told me that he is building traditional sails out of Top Gun. He loves the strength of the material…[Read more]

I am not familiar with the Prussik knot, but I use the similar rolling hitch or a timber hitch in the same way. I also have been tempted to try a mechanical attachment like your “rope grab,” but think it would spend so much time immersed in salt water that corrosion would be a problem. On balance, I think it is easier to tie/untie the knot than…[Read more]
