Thanks! Sailor's due tend toward gallows humor.

That said, such metaphors are rooted in common experience and tragedy. If people didn't periodically suffer such horrific tragedy, there would be no common reference point for such a "joke".

A tragic reminder to all of us to treat Propane, Gasoline, and other fuels that vaporize and settle in the hull with new respect and caution.

This would be fantastic! Heating up the diesel (and ours is just a little 15 HP) just to spend less than a minute maneuvering out of or in to the marina has always struck me as terribly wasteful. I sure hope this technology is mature before it comes time for us to repower.

Ahoy there Geoff,

Spirit, my 36' sloop, sails like a dream. Very easy to single hand. One, I think, unique capability of my craft is her balance while under sail.

When sailing in the slot she sails unattended for up to 30 minutes at a time. This means hands off of the wheel and no auto helm engaged. If the wind shifts during this time, she automatically adjusts and continues on her way without intervention. How sweet it is!

I am totally sold on the C&C. If yours handles as well as mine, I'm sure your will love your C&C as much as do mine.

Fair winds, Jacquei

Another sad story of not using the quality weather forecasts available free on the web from NOAA and UW. Glad to hear no harm came to the sailor.

The UW MM5 4km forecast model's Thursday 4 am run predicted high winds for Saturday early morning but had the intensity/timing off by a little, but enough to suggest caution. The 4am Friday forecast run had it about right: 25-30 knots sustained overnight which should have discouraged anchoring in an exposed spot. The winds Friday night recorded at Freeland were 25-35 sustained southerlies with gusts over 40. (These weather sources are linked off http://www.usps.org/seattle/wx.htm.)

Tough place to be with a lee shore and many miles of wave fetch.

I still can't believe its' gone. I keep rereading the last issue, waiting for the next one to replace it. A web site was needed apparently. Hope to see a new issue so I can retire the Nov 2011 issue.

FLOTSAM: Still waiting to find out what the flotsam was for November. I guessed it was a prop guard for an outboard propeller.

Hi Jacquie,
I am about to buy a C&C 36 called "Wind Spirit II". We will be based in Pittwater, which is a lovely waterway north of Sydney Harbour.
I would love to hear from you, if you have the time, telling me of your experiences sailing a C&C 36 single handed.
Happy sailing,
Geoff Bullock
