The restaurant and Hotel de Haro, from the main pier.

The end of summer, when the crowds have thinned out, is a perfect time to visit the historic, picturesque resort of Roche Harbor on San Juan Island.

The city of Anacortes is centered on the northeast tip of Fidalgo Island, bordered by Fidalgo Bay and Guemes Channel. Once the site of many canneries — this was the largest cod fishery on the west coast in the early 1900s — its most visible industry now is the oil refinery on March Point. Tankers dock at [...]

Aug 30 2011 in Currents, Fishing by Deborah Bach

Dungeness 2

If you’re planning on going crabbing on Puget Sound, better do it soon — recreational crabbing in most areas of the region closes at sunset on Labor Day, Sept. 5. The only two areas of the Sound that will remain open to crab fishing after Labor Day are marine areas 7-North and 7-South, near the San [...]

Putting the pinch on illegal crabbers

Aug 22 2011 in Environment, Fishing by Marty McOmber

The fine is intended to increase the number of catch reports filed and give fishery managers a more accurate idea of the number of crab caught during the season.

The fishermen idling alongside his Boston whaler watched uneasily as the state wildlife cop pushed aside [...]

In Migael’s Wake | Eagle Harbor (Cypress Island)

Everyone I’ve met feels the same about Cypress Island. It’s their secret, an unspoiled getaway that embodies much of what the San Juan Islands used to be: heavily wooded, quiet, remote. Both nature and design keep it so. Steep terrain, scarce water and the lack of ferry service discouraged the residential or commercial development that’s common elsewhere.

Seaport hopes new dock will attract boaters to Tacoma waterfront

Boaters heading to Tacoma might not think to stay at the Foss Waterway Seaport, but the Seaport would like to change that. A new concrete linear dock with power, water and pumpout facilities was recently installed at the Seaport, located on the north end of Thea Foss Waterway. The dock is 1,100 feet long, able [...]
