In Migael’s Wake | Blind Island State Park

Mar 23 2011 in Destinations, Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

Looking east from the state park buoys, toward the ferry dock and Shaw Island Store. Photos by Migael Scherer

Blind Bay, on the north side of Shaw Island, is one of the best destinations on the island. Blind Island State Park has mooring buoys, the anchorage is good and there is a small store at the Shaw Island ferry dock. The town of Orcas, which has a larger store and more facilities, is just [...]

In Migael’s Wake | La Conner

Mar 9 2011 in Destinations, Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

La Conner comes into view as you pass beneath the Rainbow Bridge south of town. Bridge clearance is 75 feet at the center of the span. Photos by Migael Scherer

La Conner is a terrific boating destination any time of year, but the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, which runs April 1 to 30, is one of the best times to visit this charming town.

In Migael’s Wake | Turn Island State Park

Feb 24 2011 in Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

The passage south of Turn Island is constricted by reef and rocks (visible here at an extreme low tide), and should be avoided. Photo by Migael Scherer

This small state park is less than a mile southeast of Friday Harbor, at the “turn” of San Juan Channel. The west side of the island is low, with two beautiful beaches; the steep east side overlooks San Juan Channel.

In Migael’s Wake | Kirkland Marina Park

With plenty of guest moorage and shops, restaurants and art galleries close by, Kirkland’s Marina Park makes for a perfect winter getaway. Three piers extend north from the main dock. The southwest end of the main dock is for commercial tour . . .

In Migael’s Wake | Mats Mats Bay

Jan 19 2011 in Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

A quiet winter afternoon at the Mats Mats dock. Photos by Migael Scherer

Mats Mats Bay offers excellent anchorage and its shoreline is low and mostly wooded, less densely developed than nearby Port Ludlow. Although a commercial rock quarry operates at the inlet on the northeast side of the bay (at times through the night), it is hidden from view, and Mats Mats seems almost pastoral.

In Migael’s Wake | Thea Foss Waterway (Tacoma)

Jan 5 2011 in Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

Foss Harbor Marina, looking south toward the suspension bridge and Tacoma Dome. Photos by Migael Scherer

The recently transformed Thea Foss Waterway makes Tacoma one of the best winter destinations for Puget Sound cruisers, especially after a chilly, exhilarating sail in Commencement Bay. From Commencement Bay, the waterway appears to be all oil-handling wharves, storage tanks and downtown highrises. As you motor south toward the 11th Street Bridge, small-craft marinas, condominiums [...]

In Migael’s Wake | Port Orchard

Dec 22 2010 in Destinations, Migael's Wake by Migael Scherer

The marina at Port Orchard, looking northeast. This marina has ample guest moorage. Photos by Migael Scherer

In contrast to industrial Bremerton across Sinclair Inlet, Port Orchard has a deliberate old-fashioned look, with covered sidewalks, antique shops and murals that depict life here 100 years ago. The waterfront, devoted almost entirely to public and retail use, includes a city park and a large marina that welcomes visitors. Moorings and Anchorage Guest moorage [...]
