If you boat in the Northwest, you know all about water currents. But sometimes you have to put things in perspective. And this time-lapse video by NASA does an amazing job of showing the intricate dance of water that takes place every day on our blue planet.  Hard not to be captivated by this video.

Liveaboards, how did you sleep last night?

Jan 25 2012 in Currents, Weather by Deborah Bach

The winds tore through the area so fiercely last night that at one point, I could feel our townhouse in Ballard shudder slightly. It made me wonder how liveaboards were doing. Did the gusts rock your boat last night? Did your power go out? (According to the Seattle Times, the wind caused another 38,000 power outages [...]

Why forecasters were fooled by the ice storm

Jan 23 2012 in Currents, Weather by Deborah Bach

The Seattle Times ran an excellent story on Saturday by reporters Craig Welch and Melissa Allison about why last week’s ice storm caught forecasters offguard. The story does a great job of explaining why forecasting in the Northwest is so difficult and why this storm in particular befuddled forecasters. “Small hiccups in data that feed the [...]

Waiting for the thaw

Jan 20 2012 in Currents, Weather by Deborah Bach

Dan Leach's sailboat remained snowed under at Shilshole Bay Marina on Friday morning. "What is this, Boston?" he groused. "Melt, dammit!"

The snow is pretty much done — now it’s just a matter of the melt. Temperatures are expected to gradually warm up today around Western Washington, bringing a wet frontal system through the afternoon and evening. We can expect mixed precipitation today, the National Weather Service says, changing to rain by this evening. Forecasters had initially predicted that [...]

Northwest boaters brace for Snowpocalypse that wasn’t

Jan 18 2012 in Weather by Deborah Bach

And the winner is .... Three Sheets reader Bruce Blumenstein took this photo of the Poulsbo waterfront and Liberty Bay just after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.

It looks like Puget Sound won’t get the apocalyptic dump of snow initially forecast, but plenty of the white stuff drifted down on boats and docks throughout the region Tuesday and Wednesday. We asked readers to send us photos and observations of the snowfall, which turned out to be much milder than expected. After [...]

Reader Al Felker sent this photo of Everett's 12th Street Yacht Basin during the 2010 snow storm. Send us the featured photo and we'll give you a free Three Sheets Northwest t-shirt.

The Snowpocalypse expected to hit Western Washington looks to be more of a Snowskirmish, as forecasts were downgraded Wednesday morning to call for considerably less snow than initially expected.  As of Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service had scaled back its prediction, calling for less snow than expected as an offshore front moves into the area late Wednesday afternoon and brings the [...]

One, two, three punch of storms heading our way

Nov 21 2011 in Weather by Marty McOmber

Get ready for a series of strong storms heading our way.

Looks like the weather is getting serious. Storm or gale force winds are forecast to hit Pacific Northwest waters tonight, the first of three strong frontal systems that are expected to bring rough weather through the weekend. The National Water Service office in Seattle has issued a storm warning for coastal waters, the east entrance [...]
