Three Sheets in San Francisco
Mar 7 2009 in On the Rocks by Marty McOmber
Deborah and I are in San Francisco today to look at a used sailboat. I’ve been a big fan of the Tayana Vancouver 42 for several years, and the one we are looking at seems to be in good condition. We’ll try to post some pictures later today to get your feedback.
We love our current boat, an Islander 38C, but we’ve also long dreamed of a having something that was build for offshore passages. And the Vancouver 42 fits the bill nicely. It’s the center cockpit version, which I think would be great for offshore sailing. If you have any thoughts, please share them.

Good choice!
Ours is a 1981 v42 cc with new FG decks, rigging, chainplates, dodger, sails, galley, and more. We bought her 2 years ago from the previous owners who managed the Tayana Owners Group web page.
Lots and lots of pics of Rivendell’s resoration on the Tayana web page.
We love the boat, maybe a bit too much boat for us as we are down in San Diego and need to either sell her or get her down here!
When we sailed her last year to BC and back to Elliot Bay Marina we really appreciated her sailing abilities as we crossed the Strait. She handled the steep swells, nasty rain and 25 to 30 knot winds as if she were merely getting started. Seriously, about 2 hours into the crossing I had to recheck the gauges as I could not believe that we were in some serious weather. Our non-sailing friends loved the crossing and I decided not to tell them what was up.
You’ve made a good decision in the Tayana 42 cc. Good luck in finding your perfect boat.
