Seattle Yacht Club celebrates a century

The Seattle Yacht Club was recognized Wednesday night as one of only 49 Washington corporations out of 3,500 that are still in existence after a century.
Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed presented Seattle Yacht Club Commodore Larry McCarthy with a Century Corporation Certificate during an event at the club on Wednesday.
The Seattle Yacht Club was started in 1892, and the Elliott Bay Yacht Club formed two years later. In 1909 the two clubs joined forces, adopting the Seattle Yacht Club name and retaining the Elliott Bay club’s burgee. The club incorporated that year.
The club’s current clubhouse, on the shores of Portage Bay, was constructed in 1920 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
The Seattle Yacht Club is known around the region for its Opening Day celebrations the first Saturday in May, when hundreds of boats parade through the Montlake Cut to mark the start of the annual boating season.
