Two Canadian men are facing charges after customs officers discovered 132 pounds of pot stashed on a 30-foot Bayliner southeast of San Juan Island.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted the boat about 10:15 a.m. Monday near Cattle Point, southeast of San Juan Island. The agents boarded the board for a search and questioned the two men onboard, who said they were on their way from Pender Island, British Columbia to Anacortes to look for a new dinghy.
Following an initial inspection of the boat, the agents ordered the boat to proceed to Anacortes for a more thorough inspection. An officer and detector dog were brought in to assist with the search, which turned up a stash of high-grade “B.C. bud” marijuana valued at $396,000 and concealed in various departments throughout the boat. The boat was also seized.
Raymond Kuemper, 45, and Danny Menard, 42, Canadian citizens from Langley, B.C., were arrested for importation of a controlled substance and face federal prosecution. The men appeared in U.S. District Court in Seattle Wednesday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is conducting the investigation.
“The threat of drug smuggling from Canada continues on the sea, in the air and on land,” stated Bellingham Marine Branch Director James Warfield said in a statement. “CBP’s border security marine patrols in the Pacific Northwest continue to enhance the safety of our communities.”
