ShorePlug launches waterproof cover

Seattle company SmartPlug is now selling a weatherproof cover that protects connectors from corrosion and other problems caused by exposure to the elements.

Designed to protect SmartPlug connectors when not in use, the cover locks onto the face of the connector and snaps into its side levers, creating a waterproof seal. It is also designed to keep water out if the connector is dropped overboard.

The cover retails for $19.99 and is compatible with all SmartPlug 30- and 50-amp connectors.

The release of the cover follows the introduction in July of SmartPlug’s 50-amp retrofit kit. The kit, which retails for $350, includes a stainless steel inlet and a 50-amp connector and is designed to fit on 125- or 250-volt systems. Two separate cord seals are included and allow for installation on a 125V or 250V cable.

SmartPlug was launched in 2007 with the goal of providing a safer type of shore power plug than the twist-lock variety that has long been the marine standard. Its patented system uses straight pins, a sleeve configuration, weatherproof seals and a multiple locking system to ensure a stable connection. An internal thermostat cuts power if the plug overheats, and the plug’s asymmetrical shape makes it easy to align the pins and connect it, with no twisting required.
