The Coast Guard rescued seven people who jumped into the water after the 46-foot sailboat they were on caught fire late Saturday afternoon.

The Coast Guard got a call about 5:15 p.m.that the sailboat Straight Up was ablaze just southeast of Lummi Island, approximately 15 miles southwest of Bellingham. The seven people onboard jumped overboard and were rescued by a passing boater.

Vessel Assist San Juan has been contracted to salvage the remains of the burned boat, which had about gallons of diesel onboard, the Coast Guard. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
