Boat show find: flexible, lightweight solar panels

One of the more interesting products we saw at the Seattle Boat Show was the flexible, super-thin, lightweight solar panels made by Italian company Solbian.
The Solbianflex Solar Panels, which were at the show for the first time this year, are about as thin as a flexible cutting board and weigh between 1.76 and 5.17 pounds, a fraction of the weight of the bulky, heavy panels typically seen on boats.
But what intrigued me the most is that the panels can be ordered with zippers that attach to biminis and dodgers, making for easy installation without the need for heavy, expensive mounting frames. The panels can also be mounted with grommets and lashed down on decks, though situating them in high-traffic areas is not recommended.
The high-power versions of the panels are advertised as the lightest and highest output solar panels on the market, with a reported 22.5 percent efficiency — meaning they convert that much energy in sunlight into electricity.
The U.S. importer of the panels is sailboat racer Bruce Schwab, who grew up in Seattle and in 2005 was the first American sailor to finish the Vendée Globe, a solo, nonstop race around the world.
Schwab, who was at the boat show to tout the panels, said as an “energy wonk” by necessity, having sailed around the world twice, he immediately saw their appeal.
“I saw the niche market right away, which is dodgers and biminis, because the big hassle with solar panels is the mounting,” said Schwab, who lives in Maine. “If you can get around that, it opens a big market.”
Solbian began making the panels a few years ago and designed them as a lightweight, rugged option for offshore racing, Schwab said. They cost more than conventional solar panels, ranging from $400 to $1,175 depending on size and energy output, but Schwab said the cost is more than offset by the savings on mounting equipment.
The product’s West Coast distributor, Ed Foster, said he sold more than half a dozen of the panels during the Seattle show.
“We’ve had a great response,” he said. “I’m kind of overwhelmed at the response we’ve had.”
The panels come with a five-year warranty on output and two years on physical damage. Will they last as long as more traditional solar panels? Schwab couldn’t say for sure.
“That remains to be seen,” he said. “They’re flexible, which reduces the load of an impact. But it will be interesting to see what long-term UV does to the plastic.”

Yes they can be bonded to a hard dodger with no air space. They were designed for bonding directly to the deck of open 60 ocean racers. I will be more than happy to answerany other questions you may have.

Hi Deborah,
I have a question about heat, I have looked at other flexible panels and have been told you need a vapor space to dissipate heat. What is this company saying, can they be mounted directly to hard dodger. Thanks for posting this new product.,
