Lily Winston Churchill | Cat

Lily Winston Churchill standing watch

This is our cat, Lily Winston Churchill. She’s a Siberian.

We’re convinced she loves being on the boat as much as we do. To her it’s an oversized personal jungle gym. When she’s not jumping up on the boom or skulking around in search of birds or insects, she’s chilling on deck like the Queen of Sheba. She eats fresh crab when we have it. She has quite the life. Okay, she’s horribly spoiled.

She’s also toilet trained.

We decided to toilet train her because boats are small spaces, kitty litter is nasty and Marty is obsessively tidy. It took several months and a lot of patience but was worth it. She’s been using the toilet at home for months. The next step is the head. No, she can’t flush. Anyone who’s seen the movie “Meet the Parents” always asks that.

Lily’s an intrepid traveler and so far, thankfully not prone to seasickness. She’s gone swimming only once. She had to be rescued from the frigid waters off Lopez Island with a salmon net. It was a traumatic experience we hope won’t be repeated. Not that it fazed her—the very next weekend she was back on the boat, up to her usual antics. She’s a rock star.

If we could just teach her to flush ...

If we could just teach her to flush ...
